Department Profile
YG Emergency Department sees about 52k patients/year, but because of the massive influx of tourists the daily attendance figures vary from under 100 to over 200….quite a challenge for staffing and space! Our plans for a major rebuild have been approved by the board and we are cautiously optimistic that building work may begin next year. Our hospital has a huge catchment area consisting of most of Snowdonia National Park, Anglesey, Gwynedd down to Dolgallau/Barmouth, the LLyn Peninsula, and east as far as Conwy.
Our case-mix is unusual in that we see proportionately a lot more major trauma than most units our size, probably due to the combination of mountains and motorbikes! With our location (100 miles by road from our MTC) our major trauma rarely bypass us so it nearly all comes here… especially at night and in bad weather!
Of course, just like every other UK ED, we see plenty of acute medicine, paediatrics, and a truly astonishing minor injuries workload in holiday periods, the brunt of which is (thankfully!) borne by a band of truly wonderful ENPs.
Bangor ED is home to our famous Clinical Fellow Scheme which has given us a complete middle-grade tier. There is no #MindTheRotaGap here! Middle grades are on an annualised hours contract giving maximum flexibility (two have taken the whole of the european ski season off this winter!) Work/life balance is important and with the outdoor playground of Snowdonia on our doorstep there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Don’t worry about not having people to play out with, the department has active Facebook and WhatsApp groups arranging climbing, horse riding, cinema and gin tasting sessions to name a few!
The ED consultants have a wide variety of interests and are friendly, approachable, passionate about EM, and strong advocates for their staff. We believe high quality training is essential for the future of EM and this is reflected in the amount and quality of or educational events.
