Department Profile

In their own words –

Despite its relative size compared to other Emergency Departments along the M4 corridor, the ED at PoW more than holds its own. Not the biggest ED you’ll work in, but as we all know, size isn’t everything. POW is conveniently situated just off the M4.

The Consultants at PoW have been heavily involved in the All Wales School of Emergency Medicine since its inception in 2010. The consultant team is well versed in training needs and is mindful of the importance for sustainable work life balance. The department is at the forefront of new developments in emergency care having had a RATS process in place since 2006 and continuous quality improvement is a fundamental component of our practice.

An ED, like any organisation, is only as good as its weakest link. With this in mind the department runs an excellent induction programme and has an award winning ever expanding electronic handbook for the junior staff on rotation. PoW ED is also one of the best staffed departments in Wales. For junior staff this means plenty of opportunity for supervision and teaching. For senior staff this means time. Time to spend with patients, time for supervising projects, and time for developing skills and quality improvement projects. Time in the ED is a most precious commodity, and PoW ED can provide it. The Consultants in PoW ED are knowledgeable, supportive and caring. The nursing staff are hard-working, experienced and fun. The Nurse Practitioners (ANPs and ENPs) and substantive middle grade doctors have a wealth of experience which they are more than happy to share. The portering, security and support staff are all considered part of the ED family and are treated as such. This all leads to a happy multidisciplinary team that functions well with excellent medical and nursing leadership.

“We’ll make you better … You might say we’ll make you the best of the best of the best. Those of you who can’t cut it to graduation will still be the best of the best. But you will simply be the rest of the best of the best, not the best of the best of the best, like the best of you will be.”
